#TopTenTuesday | 12th March 2024: New-to-Me Authors I Discovered in 2023 #Top10Tuesday #bookblogger #bookish #amreading #TTT #BookTwitter #booktwt #BookX #damppebbles

Hello and a very warm welcome to damppebbles. It’s Tuesday which means it’s time for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday post. I’ve decided to occasionally (that’s the keyword here, occasionally!) take part in That Artsy Reader Girl’s Top Ten Tuesday meme. The meme was originally created by The Broke and the Bookish but has lived with Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl since January 2018. It was created to encompass a love of books, of lists and to bring readers together. If you would also like to take part then you’re very welcome: the more, the merrier. Just make sure you link back to Jana’s post every week. If you don’t have a blog then no problem, just add your list to the comments below.

This is my third week of posting a Top Ten Tuesday list and after only coming up with a list of five last week (boo!) I’ve gone completely off-list this week! This week’s topic is: Books I’m Worried I Might Not Love as Much the Second Time Around. But I don’t tend to re-read books (I want to but I never seem to have the time!) and I would hate to think of not loving any of my favourite books as much a second time around so I’m going to give this one a swerve and use one of the earlier lists today instead. The list I’ve chosen was originally posted by the Top Ten Tuesday-ers at the end of January (before I started taking part myself).

My list this week will be: New-to-me authors I discovered in 2023 (let’s hope I did actually discover ten new-to-me authors in 2023….)

1. Adrian Hyland
I read the first two books in the Jesse Redpath series by Adrian Hyland last year and loved them both. Jesse is fearless, bold and sharp, and I can’t wait for book three in the series. You can’t beat Aussie crime fiction and you can’t beat a strong female lead character, in my book! | Canticle CreekThe Wiregrass |

2. Erin Young
I read The Fields towards the end of 2023 and have recently read and reviewed the second book, Original Sins, on the blog. Intricate plotting, beautiful writing and a character you can’t help but warm to. I cannot wait to see what happens to Riley Fisher next! | The FieldsOriginal Sins |

3. Ruth Kelly
I read and loved two of Ruth’s books in 2023. Her debut thriller, The Villa, and her shocking second book, The Escape The VillaThe Escape |

4. Kiersten White
Hide originally came onto my radar at the end of 2022 thanks to my annual #R3COMM3ND3D feature but it took me until 2023 to actually get a copy and read it! I loved it so much I put in a request to read and review Mister Magic. I loved that one too! | HideMister Magic |

5. Tiffany McDaniel
Sometimes you look at the blurb of a book and you think ‘YES! I know I will love that book!’. Other times, you’re…not so sure. I wasn’t sure about On the Savage Side. But I’m so glad I read it. The more I think about it, the more I believe this was my book of 2023. It’s utterly heartbreaking but sublime. Please read it! | On the Savage Side |

6. Maria Lewis
I read The Graveyard Shift whilst on holiday by the pool in Portugal and loved every single moment of it. A DJ on the graveyard shift asks for listeners to call in to win tickets to a horror movie premiere. What the DJ doesn’t expect is for the caller to be murdered live on air! Thoroughly entertaining | The Graveyard Shift |

7. Kalynn Bayron
You’re Not Supposed to Die Tonight took a different path to many other slashers out there and I loved it! This is meant for a teen audience but can easily be enjoyed by all | You’re Not Supposed to Die Tonight |

8. Rose Wilding
I will be first in the queue for whatever this author publishes next. Speak of the Devil is a feminist revenge thriller and was one of my top ten(ish) books of 2023. The severed head of a man ends up in the back room of a grotty pub in Newcastle. Around it stand seven women. One of them hated Jamie Spellman enough to decapitate him. But who? | Speak of the Devil |

9. Kate Griffin
Fyneshade is so beautifully written and so clever. It was a devilishly dark joy to read. Looking forward to seeing what this author has next for us! | Fyneshade |

10. Azma Dar
Spider is Dar’s debut and what a glorious piece of writing it is! Sophie is manipulative and devious. Ready to do whatever it takes to get whatever she wants. Again, I’m really looking forward to seeing what this author has for us next | Spider |

So it turns out it was REALLY easy to compile this list. I realised two-thirds of the way down that my authors were predominantly female so I decided to run with that and what a fabulous, talented bunch they are! I’m excited to read more by all of those listed above and I hope that if you’re on the lookout for a new book, you give one of these a try. They’re all brilliant writers who have produced some cracking, top-notch fiction.

Just because I think it’s interesting, if there wasn’t a limit of ten on this topic I would have ended up listing TWENTY SIX authors and their books. I read twenty-six brand new-to-me authors in 2023 which I’m rather pleased about. I think it’s always worth taking a chance on a new-to-you or debut author. Don’t you?

Have you read any of these books? Are you taking part in Top Ten Tuesday this week? How many debut authors have you read so far this year? Let me know in the comments.

So there we have it! If you fancy joining in next week then head on over to That Artsy Reader Girl’s blog to find out what the next topic is!

    • I’m always keen to champion female writers. I know a few people (they tend to be men) who refuse to read crime fiction written by women and that makes me very sad.

Thanks for sharing your list 💫
